This upcoming journey takes us from the West Coast into the red heart of South Australia, combining a steady transit with a rugged outback detour.
Perth to Port Augusta
The journey begins with a transit across the Nullarbor. Following our usual rhythm, we will stop every 100km to appreciate the shifting landscape and local landmarks. Upon reaching Port Augusta, we will unhitch and leave the caravan, providing the flexibility needed for the unsealed roads ahead.
The Outback Loop
Traveling north via the Stuart Highway, our first major stop is the underground town of Coober Pedy. From there, we venture onto the dirt toward William Creek, situated on the edge of the world's largest cattle station. We then join the historic Oodnadatta Track, following the old Ghan Railway route through to Marree. This stretch offers a stark, beautiful landscape of gibber plains and ancient mound springs.
Highlight: Lake Eyre Scenic Flight
The definitive highlight is a scenic flight from William Creek over Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Viewing the vast salt pan—or the rare sight of the lake filled with water—from the air is the only way to comprehend the immense scale of this inland sea and its intricate channel systems.
The Journey Home
After completing the loop and reuniting with the caravan in Port Augusta, we will take a slow, relaxed pace back to Perth. This final leg is dedicated to enjoying the open road and staying a few nights at any particularly scenic locations we find along the way.
