The vast emptiness of the Nullarbor Plain had been our constant companion for days, but now, as we approached Madura, Western Australia, the landscape began its subtle transformation. The flat horizon started to undulate, hinting at the rise ahead.

The Madura Pass presented a gentle climb, offering some welcome variation after so much flat ground. The road, while well-maintained, snaked its way through low hills and sparse vegetation. It’s a landscape that demands attention, not because of its drama, but because of its quiet, resilient beauty.

The views opened up as we ascended. We noticed a vehicle cresting the hill. We continued to watch it.
