Our visit to Smoky Bay was brief, a planned interlude before tackling the vast expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. It wasn't so much a destination in itself, but rather a strategically chosen spot to stretch our legs, enjoy a bit of coastal air, and mentally prepare for the long haul ahead.
The first thing that strikes you about Smoky Bay is the quiet. It's a different kind of quiet than the wide-open spaces; it's the quiet of a place that's comfortable in its own skin, not trying to impress anyone.

We took a stroll along the pristine beach; the sand was firm underfoot, and the water was so clear that we could see every ripple and shimmer. A lone fisherman was out casting his line further along the shore.
The jetty, a long, straight finger pointing out into the bay, was our next stop.

The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of the sea. Looking out over the water, the expanse of the ocean was calm and inviting. Pelicans perched on the railing, seemingly unbothered by our presence. One was particularly diligent about preening its feathers.

It’s a rather comical sight, really, the dedication these birds have to their personal grooming. We watched it for a few minutes, thoroughly entertained.
Smoky Bay offered a calm contrast to the journey ahead. A peaceful stop. We left feeling refreshed and ready to face the long, straight roads of the Nullarbor.
