Our journeys rarely follow a strict itinerary, and often the most rewarding experiences are those discovered by chance. That's exactly how we found ourselves in Ardrossan, South Australia. The town itself is quiet, unassuming, a place where the pace of life seems dictated by the ebb and flow of the tide. But its setting, that's where Ardrossan really shines.
The first thing that grabbed our attention was the seemingly endless jetty stretching out into the Spencer Gulf.
The Ardrossan jetty is long, very long. It's a testament to a bygone era of maritime transport, a relic of when Ardrossan served as a major shipping port for grain. Now it stands as a skeletal reminder, a place for anglers to cast their lines and for tourists like us to take in the view.
Looking south from the high ground near the town, we witnessed a remarkable coastal vista.
The towering red cliffs define the landscape, a striking contrast to the blue waters of the gulf and the pale sand of the beaches. The tide was out, exposing vast stretches of tidal flats. From our vantage point, we could see people enjoying the wide-open space, tiny figures walking across the exposed seabed, searching for shells or simply relishing the solitude.
Further along the coast, the red cliffs continue their reign, providing a dramatic backdrop to the town.
The cliffs themselves are layered with history, each band of rock a testament to geological processes stretching back millennia. It’s a harsh, unforgiving landscape, yet there's a stark beauty to it, a sense of timelessness that's difficult to ignore. From the cliffs, we could clearly see the town off to the left with its stark, white buildings.
Ardrossan may not be on everyone's must-see list, but for those seeking a dose of history, dramatic scenery, and a peaceful escape from the everyday, it’s a worthy stop. Just be sure to bring your walking shoes.
