Dartmoor, Victoria, proved to be a fascinating stop, full of unexpected artistry. We initially chose the area as a convenient overnight location, but it quickly revealed itself to be more than just a place to rest.

One of the first things we noticed were the wood sculptures. They are everywhere! Lining the main road, perched in parks, and even serving as bollards, these chainsaw creations add a unique character to the town.

Some are whimsical, depicting native animals.

Others are more abstract, towering monuments to… well, we’re not entirely sure what, but they are impressive.

It seems a great deal of artistic energy has been focused into the town and the surrounding area. The local historical society is clearly active, too. We found a well-maintained historical marker with an old milepost in front of a lovely building.

One can feel the history emanating from this town.
We even managed to get up close and personal with the local wildlife.

While Lisa was picking wild blackberries, a local furry resident decided to make an appearance. Turns out there was a koala settled high in a gum tree nearby.

It gave us a sleepy glance before settling back down for a nap. It may not be the most exciting story, but we were thrilled just to see it relaxing in the wild, in its natural environment.
Dartmoor is a location that you’ll never forget. If you're looking for a quiet stop on your travels with an unexpected artistic flair, Dartmoor might just surprise you.
