The Shire of Wellington, Victoria, offered a fascinating glimpse into maritime history we weren't expecting. We stumbled upon the wreck of the *Amazon* on the beach, a sobering reminder of the power of the sea.

The weather was as moody as the coastline itself, with brooding clouds overhead and a stiff breeze whipping off the ocean. It felt entirely appropriate for contemplating a shipwreck. The skeletal remains of the *Amazon*, poking out of the sand, painted a stark picture of its demise. It's a humbling experience to stand where such a drama unfolded. We were able to walk along the beach and consider its final resting place.
Before reaching the beach, we paused to read an information board detailing the history of the wreck.

The interpretive signage, helpfully placed by Parks Victoria, provided some context. It outlined the circumstances of the *Amazon's* grounding and the subsequent salvage efforts. "Sailing under a lee shore," it explained, a perilous situation indeed. The fact that portions of the wreck are still visible, after all these years, is quite remarkable.
We spent a good hour wandering along the beach, tracing the outline of the *Amazon* and imagining the events of that fateful day.

It's incredible how much history can be hidden in plain sight, just waiting to be discovered on a windswept shore. The experience definitely adds another layer of appreciation for the area.
