Our time in Bournda, New South Wales, certainly provided a wildlife encounter we won't soon forget. We've seen our fair share of goannas over the years, but this one was particularly brazen.
We had just settled in at our campsite when we spotted it – a large lace monitor, casually strolling around our setup.

At first, it was content to simply wander the periphery, investigating fallen logs and patches of grass. But then, it got a bit more curious.
It sauntered right up to our camping area, giving us a close-up view. It seemed completely unfazed by our presence, or the size of our vehicle, for that matter. It was more interested in what might be lurking underneath.

It then proceeded to make itself comfortable on a nearby log, looking like it owned the place. Posing on the log, we are sure it thought it was the king of Bournda, basking in the afternoon sun. We watched it for a good while, admiring its impressive size and the intricate patterns on its skin.
Eventually, it seemed to decide it had had enough sun for one day, and nonchalantly ambled off into the bush. It left us to reflect on its visit.
Bournda certainly offers more than just scenery. It also serves as a front-row seat to the raw, untamed beauty of Australian wildlife. We only hope our next encounter will be as interesting as this one. Though maybe a little less…underfoot.
