Berrima, New South Wales, proved to be a delightful stop on our journey. The historic buildings and relaxed atmosphere were a refreshing change of pace. We've certainly visited our fair share of small towns, but Berrima possesses a certain charm that's hard to quantify.

Our first stop was the Berrima Courthouse.

It's an imposing structure, especially considering the size of the town. The architecture is impressive, and we spent a few minutes admiring the building's classical design. They don’t build them like this anymore, that’s for sure.

Then we explored the main street of Berrima, which is lined with beautifully preserved buildings. The Berrima Village Pottery is just one example. We couldn’t resist popping into the Berrima General Store and Post Office

for a quick look around. It's always interesting to see what the local stores have to offer, and we managed to find a lovely postcard to send back to the grandkids.

Of course, no visit to Berrima would be complete without a visit to the Berrima Gaol.

The sandstone walls and imposing gate are a stark reminder of the town's history. The gaol is now a hotel. Quite the change, and we can't help but wonder what the original occupants would think of that. There's something about sandstone that speaks of permanency, even across such dramatic shifts in purpose.

We also stopped to admire the Surveyor General Inn

. The building has such a classic look and feel. Reportedly it is the oldest continually licensed hotel in Australia.

Berrima provided a lovely day away from the standard tourist trail. It's a place where history and charm blend seamlessly, offering a glimpse into Australia's past. We would certainly recommend a visit to anyone looking for a relaxing and informative day trip.
