We awoke this morning in Gilgrandra and drove to our free camp just outside of Dubbo, in Terramungamine, New South Wales, to an unexpected sight. A sizeable herd of goats was grazing just a few metres from our camp.

Apparently, they considered our little patch of the world to be prime real estate. The goats seemed unfazed by our presence, more interested in the lush grass than us. They pranced and cavorted with a joyful energy that was difficult to resist. Watching them reminded us that some of the best travel experiences are the unplanned ones.

Later in the day, we ventured into Dubbo itself, and encountered something quite different. Not goats, but rhinos. Fiberglass rhinos, to be exact. The town has a series of quirky statues dotted around the CBD.

One rhino, painted in vibrant yellow, green, and blue, was covered in colourful handprints. Another was a stark, pristine white, standing proudly near a row of parked cars.

They are a whimsical addition to the urban landscape, prompting a smile from everyone who passes by. We spent a good hour tracking down as many as we could find. It seems that Dubbo has embraced its artistic side with gusto.

Terramungamine and Dubbo are two places that have given us unexpected moments of enjoyment, and left us looking forward to the next leg of our journey.
