From Mudgee Showgrounds, we continued our journey to Gulgong, a town where history feels less like a museum piece and more like an everyday experience. The beautifully preserved heritage architecture immediately captivated us. You can practically hear the echoes of a bygone era as you walk the streets.

Gulgong's connection to Henry Lawson is undeniable. This post-Gold Rush town heavily influenced his stories and poems, shaping the landscape of Australian literature. Lawson spent his childhood near Gulgong, attending school in Eurunderee.

The Henry Lawson Centre is a testament to his legacy, a dedicated, volunteer-run museum brimming with extensive memorabilia. It’s quite impressive, especially knowing it's maintained by dedicated locals.
We explored the town’s charming streets, admiring the well-preserved buildings. The Ten Dollar Town Motel, with its distinctive architecture, is a notable landmark.

It seems a far cry from what ten dollars could actually buy you these days. We saw grand old hotels standing proudly, like the Prince of Wales.

Such structures remind us of a time when Gulgong was a bustling hub.

The main street is a delightful blend of old-world charm and contemporary commerce.
Our visit on October 18, 2024, reinforced our appreciation for towns that diligently preserve their heritage. Gulgong has managed to retain its character, offering a unique glimpse into Australia's past.
