Our attention was immediately drawn to the aircraft perched proudly atop a steel pillar. It's a Fairey Firefly, a World War II naval reconnaissance aircraft. A bit out of place for a random roadside stop, we thought.

The plaque clarified its history: designed and built in Britain during 1941, the Firefly saw active service on H.M.A.S. Sydney in Korea. According to the sign, the citizens of Griffith donated this aircraft as a memorial to our airmen. It's a fitting tribute and a somewhat sobering reminder of the sacrifices made in conflicts past. We suppose even an old warbird can find a peaceful retirement here in Griffith.
