Lake Wyangan, New South Wales, greeted us with a sunrise that could have been painted by a Renaissance master. The entire landscape was awash in gold, a scene so striking it almost felt staged. We watched from the lake's edge as the day began, the water reflecting the sky with perfect clarity. Ducks floated serenely across the still surface, seemingly unfazed by the sheer brilliance of it all.

The stark silhouettes of the dead trees that punctuate the shoreline added a touch of the surreal to the otherwise idyllic view. A few brave birds perched on the branches, seemingly surveying their watery domain. The reflections in the lake doubled the visual impact, creating a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.

While the beauty of Lake Wyangan is undeniable, even seasoned travelers like ourselves require practical provisions. A trip into town was unavoidable. We located a local Italian grocer, The Italian Fresh Mercato, and stocked up on essentials.

The place was bustling, indicating its popularity with the locals. We’ve always found that the best way to get a feel for a place is to visit its markets and see what the people are buying. And perhaps purchase a cannoli or two.
