From our camp near Lake Lonsdale, we decided to take a drive into Stawell. We’d passed through the town before, but never really stopped to explore. This time, we were determined to rectify that omission. We got a fine overview of the town from the high ground

. On a clear day, as it was, you can see quite a distance.
Before leaving our campsite, we had some charming visitors: the local birds came to say hello

. One strikingly beautiful parrot in particular graced us with its presence before we departed. It really did make our morning special, before heading off for a closer look at Stawell itself.
Our destination was the local heritage rock site. It turns out that Stawell holds some fascinating history etched not just in its buildings, but directly onto the very rocks themselves. One large boulder, now protected, stands as a testament to the area's indigenous past

. Caged for its own protection, this imposing rock formation features Aboriginal rock art. We examined the ancient artwork depicting figures and animals

. It is a stark reminder of the stories that were here long before any of us. It's a humbling thing, really, to be reminded of the long history of this land.
