We've learned that some of the best travel experiences are the unexpected detours – those little deviations from the main road that lead to hidden gems. That's precisely what happened to us in Glossop, South Australia. We weren’t specifically looking for it, but we certainly found something worth writing about.
Our meandering journey led us to a captivating combination: lavender and local wine.

The Lavender Café, a charming building set against the clear blue sky, beckoned. It’s a place that immediately engages the senses. The scent of lavender hung heavy in the air, a fragrant invitation to explore further.
Beyond the café, we discovered a meticulously cultivated garden.

The vibrant purples and reds of the various lavender varieties, interspersed with statues and other flowering plants, created a visual feast. It’s the kind of space that encourages slow wandering and quiet contemplation. Lisa, of course, found the perfect spot for a momentary rest.

We suspect she was planning how to recreate a miniature version of this back in Western Australia.
Of course, no visit to this corner of South Australia would be complete without sampling the local produce. The Lavender Café doesn’t just offer lavender-infused treats; it also provides an opportunity to taste wines from the region. They had a very impressive selection, which we enjoyed looking at, and, of course, purchasing.

Now, we’re no sommeliers, but we do know what we like, and there’s a certain satisfaction in discovering a new favourite while surrounded by fields of lavender.
It just goes to show that sometimes, the most memorable travel moments are the ones you least expect.
