We've seen a few things on our travels across this vast country, but Lake Bumbunga near Lochiel, South Australia, certainly ranks high on the list of the surreal. Imagine a lake, stretching out towards the horizon, its waters a striking shade of pink. Not a subtle, pastel pink, mind you, but a vivid, almost electric hue.

Of course, the colour is due to the high salt concentration and the presence of algae, but that doesn't make it any less captivating. We stood there, taking in the view, wondering if someone had accidentally spilled a giant bottle of raspberry cordial. The lake's colour shifts throughout the year, varying from a vibrant pink to a shimmering white, depending on the salinity levels.
But the colour isn't the only thing that draws people to Lake Bumbunga. Apparently, it's also home to a rather shy… creature. Yes, you read that right.

Rising from the pink waters, its dark form makes one question if they have had too much sun. We have to say, our minds were boggled.
The local council, in their infinite wisdom, have capitalised on this "creature", installing a large, painted photo frame on the shores of the lake.

Of course, we had to pose for a photo, adding our own mugs to the legend. Lochiel knows how to turn a pink lake and a mythical creature into a tourist attraction, and we are all for it!
