No matter the time of year or where we begin, we invariably find ourselves rolling into Wirrulla, South Australia, around morning tea or lunchtime. It's become our preferred place to stop, stretch our legs, and soak in the unique charm of this little town.

The Wirrulla Hotel, a classic Aussie pub, stands proudly on the main street. It's seen better days, perhaps, but it provides a welcoming place for locals and travellers alike.

One of Wirrulla's claims to fame – or perhaps infamy – is its, shall we say, *distinctive* public convenience.

This isn’t your average roadside lavatory. The circular structure, adorned with a splash of abstract art on the adjacent post, stands alone. One might even call it a tourist attraction in its own right. It is certainly... memorable.

Then there's the 'Wirrulla Wharf'.

Now, the story goes that Streaky Bay had a wharf, feeling a bit left out, Wirrulla decided they too needed a wharf. So they built one. The only problem? Wirrulla is nowhere near the sea. It’s a good walk. Still, that hasn't stopped locals from chuckling about the 'maritime' history of Wirrulla ever since. The wharf, while a bit worse for wear, offers a spot for a picnic or a bit of quiet contemplation.

Wirrulla might not be on everyone's travel radar, but it's a great place to see a typical outback town. We recommend you take a break there if you're nearby.
