The sheer vastness of the Nullarbor Plain never ceases to amaze us. Driving along Madura Pass,

, the seemingly endless expanse stretches before you, a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of this part of the world. You could be forgiven for thinking there's nothing out here. We certainly thought so until we arrived at the Eucla Telegraph Station ruins.
The old Eucla ruins are a stark reminder of the ambition of early settlement, and of the unforgiving nature of the environment.

The sand is relentlessly trying to reclaim what was once built, offering a poignant scene. We can see the old brickwork, now covered in a layer of graffiti, slowly succumbing to the elements.
From there, it's a relatively short hop to the original site of the Eucla settlement, situated right on the coast. The weather-beaten remains of the old jetty stand as an example of Mother Nature's power.

The vibrant blue of the ocean against the bleached wood is quite stunning, but it’s also clear that time and tide wait for no structure.
Finally, we reached Border Village, South Australia. Crossing the border is always something of an anticlimax after such a long drive. The border crossing itself is straightforward, but it's the giant kangaroo holding a jar of Vegemite that really makes the place memorable.

It's a bit of a tourist trap, of course, but we couldn't resist a quick photo. After all, how often do you see a kangaroo that enthusiastic about Vegemite?
