Sometimes the best discoveries are right in your own backyard. Lisa and I decided to do a short run through our home state to track down some more of Australia's incredible silo art, and we struck gold in the little town of Pingrup.

We've seen a fair few of these magnificent murals now as we've travelled around the country, but there's something special about finding one so close to home in Western Australia. The drive out to Pingrup takes you through classic wheatbelt country – those endless golden paddocks stretching to the horizon, the occasional mob of sheep, and that big blue sky that seems to go on forever.

When we rolled into town, the silos absolutely dominated the landscape. Three massive grain silos transformed into stunning outdoor galleries celebrating everything that makes rural Australia what it is. The detail is extraordinary – a horseback rider, a farmer with his sheep, and a working dog perched on vintage farm machinery. Each panel tells its own story of agricultural heritage and the hard-working people who've shaped this country.

What strikes me every time we visit these country towns is how the silo art has breathed new life into communities that might otherwise be bypassed. Pingrup is tiny, but these murals give travellers like us a reason to stop, stretch the legs, and spend a bit of time appreciating what these small towns have to offer.

Lisa wandered around taking it all in while I set up for some photos. The late afternoon light was perfect, throwing long shadows and bringing out the rich colours in the murals. You really need to stand back to appreciate the scale of these things – they're absolutely enormous, and the artists who create them deserve huge credit for their skill and vision.

It was a short trip, just a quick overnighter really, but it reminded us that you don't always need to travel thousands of kilometres to find something worthwhile. Sometimes the treasures are right here in your own state, waiting to be discovered in the most unexpected places.
