We’ve moved on from Cooee and found ourselves a great spot in West Ulverstone, Tasmania. We’re staying right at the golf club here, nestled in amongst the trees. As soon as we arrived and got the place organised, I had one main goal in mind: the firewood. I’d been hauling a decent stash in the back of the car, and I told Lisa we weren’t leaving this spot until we’d used every last bit of it.

There is something deeply satisfying about unloading a heavy load of wood and knowing you’ve got a few good nights of fires ahead of you. I got to work setting everything up, stacking the logs neatly next to the fire drum. I even made sure the kettle was handy, perched on a plank right next to the heat. Sitting there in the cool air, watching the flames take hold and smelling that woodsmoke, I felt a million miles away from any worries.

While I was sitting by the drum, just enjoying the quiet, we were visited by the locals. A few tiny, brave birds started flitting around our feet, scavenging in the dirt. One little bloke in particular really stood out—a Superb Fairy-wren. He hopped right up close to me, showing off those brilliant, iridescent blue tail feathers. He was a busy little thing, darting around the leaves and twigs, completely unbothered by us sitting there. It’s those small, simple moments, just me, Lisa, and a curious bird by the fire, that really stay with you.
