We always enjoy discovering the unexpected facets of a place, and Stawell, Victoria, certainly delivered. Of course, most know Stawell for the Stawell Gift, Australia's oldest and richest footrace. We decided to have a closer look.

The first thing that struck us was the dedication to the history of the event. The Stawell Athletic Club building is adorned with a striking mural,

a modern tribute to a tradition stretching back to 1878. The artwork is bold and colourful, a fitting representation of the energy surrounding the Gift.

The entrance to Central Park, where the race is held, is quite grand. The gates

exude a sense of history and occasion. One can almost hear the roar of the crowds echoing from years gone by as they passed through those gates.

We wandered around the grounds, coming across a stone monument

dedicated to past runners. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder of the countless athletes who have poured their hearts and souls into competing at Stawell.

is a classic piece of Australian sporting architecture. We suspect it has seen its fair share of triumphs and disappointments over the years. It's a tangible link to the past, and adds character to the venue.

While we didn't catch the Stawell Gift itself (not until Easter!), we gained a much deeper appreciation for its significance to the town. It's clear that the race is more than just a sporting event; it's a part of Stawell's identity and a source of immense local pride. We're glad we took the time to explore.
