We found ourselves passing through Bordertown, South Australia, a town neither of us had visited before, en route to catching the ferry in Geelong. Our destination was Tasmania, but we always try to explore along the way. What we discovered in Bordertown was a rather pleasant surprise.
Bordertown possesses a certain charm, centered around a surprisingly well-maintained water feature that runs right through the heart of town.

It's a bit of a winding stream, more than just a decorative pond, and appears to be quite popular with the local birdlife. We saw several ducks paddling about, seemingly unconcerned by the passersby. The water is clean and clear, fed by a small fountain in the middle of the stream. The setting is quite picturesque, particularly with the mature eucalyptus trees lining the banks.
We took a short stroll along the path that follows the watercourse, observing several seating areas and picnic tables strategically placed for optimal enjoyment. We noticed a few families making the most of the day, which was quite pleasant with clear skies and a gentle breeze.

The landscaping is well done, with neatly manicured lawns sloping down to the water's edge. The town has clearly put some effort into creating a pleasant public space.
It's amazing what you can find in these little out-of-the-way places. Far too many travelers these days are so focused on getting from point A to point B that they miss the quiet beauty of a spot like this. It's worth taking the time to slow down and see what’s around you.
The main part of the watercourse widens to form a bit of a small lagoon, crossed by several bridges.

We found ourselves enjoying the quiet solitude of this space, a welcome change of pace. The reflections of the trees in the water were quite beautiful. We took a moment to appreciate this unexpected oasis before continuing on our journey eastward. Bordertown, you surprised us.
