Today, Lisa and I found ourselves in Cowell, South Australia, a town that truly marries rural charm with impressive artistry. The big draw here, without a doubt, is the silo art.

Painted by Austin N I T S U A’ Moncrieff, with assistance from Michael ‘Schmick’ Motteran-Smith, the silos were finished back on September 18, 2019. And let me tell you, they are a sight to behold. The centrepiece is local legend Lionel Deer, depicted with his camel, Diamantina. Lionel is an institution around here, having brought his camels to the Cowell Christmas Pageant for over 30 years. The artwork really captures that spirit.
But Schmick's contributions don't stop there. Just a stone's throw from the silos, there's a mural that he also worked on; it's another vibrant addition to the town's artistic landscape.
Beyond the silo art, Cowell has a certain historical feel, with classic Australian architecture lining the streets. The Franklin Hotel stands proudly at the corner, a real landmark.

Just down the road, the Commercial Hotel provides the town with another watering hole and meeting place.

Further down the street is another classic-looking building.

The town really invites you to slow down and absorb the atmosphere. It's a place where you feel connected to the land and the community. Cowell is a delightful blend of art, history, and genuine Aussie hospitality, making it a must-see destination on the Eyre Peninsula.
