Our 2018 Big Lap was an adventure of grand proportions, a journey etched into our memories. Starting with a proper send-off from our daughters, a moment filled with laughter and perhaps a few surreptitious tears, we embarked on what would become a nearly half-year odyssey. The initial stages were a gentle easing into life on the road, punctuated by charming discoveries in the Western Australian wheatbelt and the vast, humbling expanse of the Nullarbor Plain. We crossed state lines, ventured into the heart of South Australia, and even found unexpected delights in roadside restrooms.
Our journey soon evolved, taking us into the historic towns of South Australia and New South Wales. Silverton, with its palpable outback charm and echoes of a silver boom, left an indelible mark. We explored its artistic heart, paying homage to Pro Hart and marvelling at the ingenuity of bin donkeys. Gradually, Queensland drew us in, beckoning us towards its unique brand of beauty and adventure.
The charm of Queensland truly began to reveal itself as we crossed the border. Our excitement bubbled when we stumbled upon our very first silo art in the town of Thallon

. These massive, vibrant murals immediately set the tone for the state's many colourful surprises. This was just the start of our love affair with Queensland.
The rugged beauty of Carnarvon Gorge captured our hearts with its ancient peaks. We savoured the mornings as mystical mist swirled around ancient peaks, creating the most glorious photo opportunities that are etched in our memories

. Further north, we were captivated by the Atherton Tablelands, finding serenity at Yungaburra's lakeside. The sunrises there were nothing short of breathtaking, painting the sky with hues that seemed almost unreal

. Nearby, Lake Tinaroo became a favourite haunt. We found solace in watching the birdlife and the ever-changing light dancing on the water

.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway was more than just a mode of transport; it was an experience

. As the train wound its way through lush rainforest, we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the engineering feat and the sheer beauty of the landscape. Our journey continued to reveal unexpected gems, like a farm stay in Burdekin, where we experienced the sweetness and the "burn" of farm life.

Our travels weren't always smooth sailing. There were flat tyres, unexpected detours, and the occasional navigational challenge. But these moments, too, became part of the fabric of our adventure, teaching us resilience and the importance of embracing the unexpected. Our time in Brisbane allowed us to unwind, relax and do some sightseeing, including a river cruise and riverside ramble

.
In total, we covered an incredible 16000+ kilometres, a testament to our dedication and the allure of the open road. Although our "Big Lap" ended prematurely due to unforeseen circumstances, cutting our journey short, the memories and experiences gained will undoubtedly last a lifetime. We came to know the vastness of our country and the incredible beauty that exists in every corner.
We've realised that travel isn't just about ticking off destinations on a list; it's about immersing ourselves in the present, connecting with the people we meet, and appreciating the simple moments that make life worthwhile. The 2018 Big Lap was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the Australian spirit, a journey we will forever cherish.
