Mackay Regional offered us a welcome opportunity to stretch our legs and enjoy the Queensland coastline. After inland adventures, the sight of the ocean always provides a refreshing reset. We were fortunate enough to find a spot where the contrast of basalt rock against the golden sand created a striking landscape. It’s a far cry from the red dirt of Western Australia, but equally beautiful in its own way.
The air in Mackay was filled with the cries of seabirds. We always find it amusing how they seem to squabble even on the most idyllic days.

We spent a good hour watching them swoop and dive, undoubtedly hunting for their next meal. One has to admire their persistence; if only we could apply that level of focus to finding a decent coffee.
Beyond the immediate coastline, Mackay offered glimpses of a thriving community nestled against the sea. It's quite different than the vast expanse of the outback we're used to, and yet there is a similar relaxed pace of life. We enjoyed the feel of the sun on our faces as we took a stroll.

There's nothing like the tang of salt in the air to clear out the cobwebs after a long day. It's easy to see why people choose to call this place home. A lovely, relaxing day.
