Having previously explored the coast around Hervey Bay, we turned our attention inland, specifically toward Bundaberg East, Queensland. It’s a region known for a few things, but one immediately springs to mind: Bundaberg Rum.
We certainly weren't going to pass up the opportunity to tour the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, especially as our friends Phil and Annette were keen to join us. It’s a good thing to have company when sampling potent potables, purely for safety, of course.

The distillery is quite the operation. Before diving into the tour, we felt obliged to grab a photo with the oversized Bundaberg Rum bottle statue. Touristy? Absolutely. Regrettable? Not in the slightest.

The scale of the thing is remarkable. It's as if Paul Bunyan took up distilling.
The tour itself was informative, detailing the history and process of making this iconic Australian spirit. We learned a thing or two, although whether we’ll remember it after a few generous samples remains to be seen. Following the tour, a visit to the gift shop was, naturally, essential. Phil and Annette managed to stock up on some choice souvenirs – some for themselves, and some, we suspect, for us.

We won't say no to a good bottle of rum. It’s all part of experiencing the local flavour, wouldn’t you agree?
