Our time in the Isaac Regional, Queensland, proved to be a fascinating study in contrasts, from vast open spaces to surprising pockets of vibrant wildlife. One day, we found ourselves beside the shimmering expanse of the Elphinstone Dam.

It was the sort of peaceful setting that just invites one to sit and observe.
We watched the local birdlife, and were especially taken by a lone pelican.

It seemed to have established a patrol route of its own, working a long, straight line across the dam before inexplicably turning around and retracing its path. This went on for what seemed like hours, a repetitive dance across the water. What it was looking for, we couldn't be sure, perhaps a particularly elusive fish, or maybe it just enjoyed the exercise. Whatever the reason, it provided a good deal of amusement for us.
