Island life. What more can one say? Apparently, quite a bit, actually. After our day up at the peak in Townsville yesterday, we thought a complete change of pace was in order. That meant a short ferry trip to Magnetic Island, and specifically, to Arcadia Bay. We’ve always found that the best antidotes to busy schedules and the stresses of modern life involve sunshine, sand, and the rhythmic lapping of waves. Arcadia Bay certainly delivered.

The bay itself is quite picturesque, sheltered and inviting. The water was a shimmering turquoise, remarkably clear.

Finding a patch of shade under a gnarled tree was our first order of business; sun-smart is the only way to be.

It's funny, isn't it? The simple act of sitting on a beach, watching families paddle in the shallows, somehow re-calibrates the soul. There’s a certain timeless quality to it all. No emails to check, no appointments to keep (unless you count the very important appointment with relaxation). We observed the comings and goings; the ebb and flow of beach life. A young family built an ambitious sandcastle, complete with elaborate moats. Two teenagers played frisbee, their laughter echoing across the sand. An older couple strolled hand-in-hand, their footsteps leaving transient impressions in the wet sand.

We are very much alike.

Arcadia Bay has that laid-back, unpretentious feel that we both appreciate. It’s not overly developed, retaining a natural charm. The rocky outcrops at either end of the beach add a sense of drama to the scenery, while the gentle slope of the sand makes it ideal for swimming, and just generally pottering about.

It truly is a place where one can easily lose track of time, and that, in our humble opinion, is a very good thing. We soaked it all in, hoping to bottle a bit of that island serenity to take back with us. We think we did a fairly good job. It's moments like these that make the journey worthwhile.
