Leaving the cooler climes of Kuranda behind, we ventured down the winding road to Cairns for a day trip. Our primary destination: the Cairns Botanic Gardens, a place we had heard held a truly impressive collection of tropical flora.

We are always looking for an excuse to get out and stretch our legs, and the Botanic Gardens provided the perfect opportunity. The expansive grounds offered a variety of themed gardens and walking trails, a welcome change from the relentless humidity of some other areas we've visited.
One of the first areas we explored was the Flecker Garden, showcasing plants from both Australia and Southeast Asia.

This area had a decidedly oriental influence, with strategically placed pagodas and sculptures. The towering bamboo grove proved particularly impressive, dwarfing most visitors who ventured inside.

Of course, the real stars of the show were the flowers. The vibrant colours and exotic shapes of the tropical blooms were captivating.

We found ourselves continually stopping to admire the sheer diversity on display. From fan palms

to water lilies and the bizarre, otherworldly shapes of the aroids

, the garden truly had something for everyone. Even those with a passing interest in botany are bound to find something that holds their attention.
The Cairns Botanic Gardens are impeccably maintained and provide an excellent opportunity for a peaceful stroll or a more focused study of tropical plants. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and we're already looking forward to our next botanical adventure.

We even made a new friend!

It's a good thing, because between us, we haven't had any friends since high school!
