Our journey continues south. We made a spontaneous decision to stop at Port Douglas. We hadn't initially planned to spend any time here. Truthfully, we only intended to use it as a through point. However, something about the allure of the town beckoned us. And we are both very glad it did.

As we approached the outskirts, the air seemed to change. A salty tang replaced the inland dryness, and the foliage became noticeably more lush.

We found ourselves immediately captivated. The streets were clean, the architecture was appealing, and there was a definite buzz of activity without feeling overcrowded.

We spent an afternoon simply wandering. The marina was a hive of activity, with boats of all sizes bobbing gently in the turquoise water. We watched as tour operators prepared for their sunset cruises and fishing charters. The atmosphere was one of relaxed holiday cheer.

The shops also proved tempting. Many were small, independent boutiques offering unique souvenirs and locally made crafts. We resisted the urge to overspend – a constant battle on these trips – but we did manage to find a few small treasures to remind us of our time there.

Perhaps the highlight of our impromptu visit was the beach.

The sand was soft and white, and the water was invitingly clear. We walked along the shore, enjoying the gentle breeze and the stunning views out to the Coral Sea. We imagined ourselves swimming, sunbathing and generally living the good life.

Unfortunately, our schedule dictated that we press on. Our next caravan park site was already booked, and we dislike breaking commitments. However, we both agreed that Port Douglas had left a lasting impression. Had we not been on a strict itinerary, we would have happily extended our stay.

It’s a place we would readily return to, perhaps for a longer, more leisurely exploration. Next time we'll be sure to allocate much more time. Consider this a warning to future travellers: factor in ample time for Port Douglas. You won't regret it.
