The Bloomfield Track had been whispering promises of adventure to us for quite some time, so finally making the journey was a thrill. Partway along, we decided to stop at Cowie Beach, a sliver of sand carved out of the dense rainforest.

Our excitement, however, was tempered by the previous day's near encounter with a saltwater crocodile. The memory of its shadowy form lurking in the water still felt unsettling.

The track to Cowie Beach was somewhat overgrown, requiring us to carefully pick our way through the vegetation. We won't deny, a small part of us considered turning back. The imagination, after all, can play tricks in such isolated places. But, being the intrepid (or perhaps slightly stubborn) explorers we are, we pushed onward. The call of the Coral Sea was too strong to resist.

Reaching the beach, we were rewarded with a scene of almost surreal beauty. The sand was pristine, the turquoise water beckoned, and the air was thick with the scent of salt and rainforest.

We explored the shoreline, keeping a wary eye out for any reptilian visitors, of course. There was a tangible serenity here, a feeling of being utterly removed from the everyday. A welcome change.

The track itself, while not the full-blown, axle-twisting experience some had warned us about, was certainly engaging.

Continuing south towards Cape Tribulation, another bucket-list destination, we felt the familiar pull of adventure urging us onwards. The rainforest pressed close, the air hung heavy with humidity, and the sun beat down with tropical intensity. This was precisely the type of experience we had envisioned.

Cape Tribulation, living up to its name in terms of visitor numbers, offered stunning views and another opportunity to reflect on the sheer scale of this wild and beautiful land.

Leaving the crowds behind (eventually), we continued to relish the relative solitude and the incredible scenery. We wouldn't trade these moments for all the creature comforts in the world – well, almost. A strong cup of tea in a comfortable armchair does have its appeal, we confess.
