Sometimes the best days on the road are the quiet ones, where you simply park up beside the water and let the world slow down to the pace of the river. That's exactly what we did today at Warroo Bridge, just outside St George in Queensland's interior. After weeks of steady travel, it felt good to simply be still for a while.
We found ourselves a lovely spot right on the riverbank, where the Balonne River meanders through stands of beautiful river red gums. The water's running a muddy brown—typical for these inland waterways—but there's something honest and authentic about it. This is real Australia, not the postcard-perfect beaches most people imagine. The bridge itself is a sturdy concrete structure that's clearly seen plenty of use over the years, connecting communities across this remote stretch of country.
Lisa and I took the tinny out for a gentle paddle this morning, just drifting along under that brilliant Queensland blue sky. The riverbanks are thick with eucalyptus, and the birdlife is exceptional. We spotted several species of waterbirds going about their business, completely unconcerned by our presence. There's something meditative about being on the water like this—no real destination in mind, just the gentle movement of the current and the occasional call of a kookaburra from the trees.
As the day drew to a close, we were treated to an absolutely stunning sunset. The still water became like glass, perfectly mirroring the ghostly white trunks of the gums and creating those magical doubled reflections that photographers dream about. The golden hour light transformed the whole scene into something almost ethereal. These are the moments that make the travelling life so worthwhile—when nature puts on a show and you're fortunate enough to have a front-row seat.
We've got the van set up on the grassy bank, and tonight we'll enjoy the sounds of the river and the bush as darkness settles in. No rush to be anywhere tomorrow. Sometimes that's the greatest luxury of all.
