We've settled into our camp at Warroo Bridge for several days now, and it's reminded me of something important—you don't need bouncy castles or fancy facilities to get the most out of your camping experience. Sometimes the best camps are the simplest ones.

This spot along the riverbank in the Forbes Shire has everything we need and nothing we don't. The historic timber bridge spans the calm waters, creating perfect reflections in the morning light that have kept my camera busy. River red gums tower overhead, providing shade through the heat of the day, and the grass along the bank is soft enough for Lisa and me to roll out our mats and simply exist beside the water.

The beauty of staying put for a few days is the rhythm you fall into. There's no rush to pack up and push on to the next destination. Instead, we've had time to properly explore our surroundings, to notice the patterns of birdlife that visit throughout the day—elegant egrets and herons perching in the dead trees along the river, creating striking silhouettes against the blue sky. We've watched the light change from golden dawn to the warm glow of afternoon, each bringing out different characteristics in the bridge and surrounding bushland.

Our Retreat pop-top is positioned perfectly to take advantage of the view, and even out here in this peaceful, remote location, the satellite dish keeps us connected when we choose to be. But mostly, we've been choosing not to be. The chairs are out, the billy's been on countless times, and we've rediscovered that rare commodity in modern life—unhurried time.

This is what free camping along Australia's inland waterways is all about. No neighbours, no noise except the river and the birds, no pressure to move along. Just us, the caravan, and the simple pleasure of a beautiful camp beside the water. It's these places, these quiet days, that remind you why you set out on the Big Lap in the first place.
