What an absolute ripper of a day! Lisa and I finally crossed the border into Queensland—our first time setting foot in the Sunshine State, and we couldn't be more excited about this next chapter of our Big Lap adventure.

The moment arrived mid-morning when we pulled up at the iconic Queensland border crossing. Of course, we had to stop for the obligatory photo at the 'Welcome to Queensland - Where Australia Shines' sign. Our trusty travel companion, the Minion in Hawaiian gear, posed proudly in front of the colourful display showcasing all the adventures that await us—snorkelling, rainforest walks, and beach life. Standing there in the dry outback landscape, it was hard to imagine those tropical scenes, but that's the beauty of this country—the incredible diversity we're going to experience.

We pushed on to Hebel, a tiny outback settlement that's about as remote as they come. The Hebel Hotel absolutely stole our hearts—this is what authentic outback Australia is all about. The classic pub with its red corrugated iron roof and wraparound verandah is a proper landmark, flying the Australian flag and advertising the essentials: meals, beer, fuel, and cabins. Everything a traveller needs!

The character of this place is something special. The verandah is decorated with hand-painted murals featuring native birds and local wildlife, with mismatched chairs scattered about creating the perfect spot for a cold one. We got a good laugh at the dunny doors with their clever 'Man-Goes' and 'No-Man-Goes' signs—classic outback humour that never gets old.

Inside, the chalkboard advertised happy hours and community meals, reminding us that these remote pubs aren't just watering holes—they're the beating heart of these tiny communities. The weathered paint and faded signs speak of decades of history, of countless travellers passing through, and of locals gathering for a yarn.

Queensland, we've arrived, and if Hebel is any indication of what's to come, we're in for one hell of an adventure!
