What a day! We've officially crossed into Queensland—our first time in the Sunshine State and the excitement is absolutely buzzing through the van. After months of planning and weeks on the road, seeing that iconic 'Welcome to Queensland - Where Australia Shines' sign appear on the horizon felt like a proper milestone. Of course, our trusty Minion had to mark the occasion with a photo op, dressed in his finest Hawaiian shirt and looking far more prepared for the tropics than we probably are!
The landscape as we crossed the border was classic outback—dry, wide-open country stretching endlessly under a brilliant blue sky. It's hard to describe the feeling of entering a new state when you're doing the Big Lap. Each border crossing represents not just a new destination, but a whole new chapter of adventure waiting to unfold.
Our first proper stop in Queensland was the legendary Hebel Hotel, and what an absolute ripper of a place! This classic outback pub is everything you'd hope for—weathered red corrugated iron roof, cream weatherboard walls, and that unmistakable XXXX beer sign welcoming thirsty travelers. The wide verandah, dotted with mismatched chairs and tables, provides the perfect shaded spot to catch your breath after crossing the border.
The character of this place is off the charts. Hand-painted murals decorate windows featuring local birdlife, and the bathroom doors are an absolute hoot—complete with 'Man-Goes' and 'No-Man-Goes' signs adorned with colorful artwork including barbed wire fencing and cheeky bird illustrations. Australian flag bunting drapes from the roofline, and multiple flags fly proudly overhead. It's these authentic touches that make remote outback pubs so special.
The Hebel Hotel isn't just a watering hole—it's a vital service hub for travelers like us, offering meals seven days a week, fuel, and even cabins for those who want to linger longer. Lisa and I grabbed a cold drink and soaked in the atmosphere, chatting with locals and fellow travelers about the roads ahead. The notice board displayed trading hours and weekly events on a well-worn chalkboard, testament to this pub's role as the social heart of the community.
