Sometimes the best moments on the road are the unplanned ones—those simple stops where you pull up somewhere beautiful and just take a breath. Today's lunch break proved exactly that, as we found ourselves right on the banks of the river at St George.

The river here flows with that distinctive muddy brown colour you see throughout much of inland Queensland, a reminder that we're well and truly in the heart of the country now. Despite the murky water, there's something oddly soothing about watching it drift lazily past while you're settling in for a feed.

The rest area itself is a cracker—proper facilities with a covered shelter sporting those cheerful blue pillars that seem to be the standard for Queensland council rest stops. Orange accents add a splash of colour, and most importantly, there's solid shade from both the shelter and the magnificent old gum trees that line the riverbank. These ancient eucalypts have clearly been standing guard here for decades, their massive trunks and spreading branches creating pockets of dappled shade across the grassy banks.

We pulled the van into position with plenty of room to spread out, and Lisa got lunch sorted while I wandered down to the water's edge with the camera. The whole setup is beautifully maintained—grassy areas mown, facilities clean, and enough space that even with a few other travellers about, you don't feel crowded.

There's something to be said for these riverside stops in the outback towns. They're not just convenient places to pull over—they're genuine community assets that show how much these regional centres value their visitors. The locals clearly take pride in keeping them up to scratch.

We took our time over lunch, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the gentle whisper of wind through the gum leaves. No rush, no agenda beyond sitting still for a while and soaking up the tranquility of this spot. The temperature was perfect, the company excellent, and the view? Well, you can't complain about having a river right there at your doorstep.

Sometimes the journey really is about these quiet moments between destinations—the lunch stops that turn into hour-long breaks simply because the location deserves your time.
