The weather has finally caught up with us. After days of grey skies, the wet weather rolled in across the Eyre Highway, and with it, a different mood altogether. There's something quite peaceful about it, really—the muted tones, the soft light, the gentle hush that seems to settle over the landscape.

We've made our way through Kimba today, that famous little town that proudly claims to be halfway across Australia. It's one of those quintessentially Australian spots that you simply can't pass without stopping, if only to stretch the legs and snap a photo with the iconic giant galah standing guard out the front of the shop. The big pink bird looks right at home under these grey skies, a splash of colour against the weathered shopfront and the muted backdrop. There's a certain charm to these roadside attractions—they're more than just tourist novelties; they're markers of progress on this massive journey around the country.

The road ahead has taken on a different character with the rain-dampened bitumen and low-hanging clouds. That endless ribbon of highway stretching into the misty horizon through the sparse scrubland—it's a view that captures what the Big Lap is really about. These vast distances, the changing conditions, the way the landscape transforms with the weather. It's quite something to witness.</p>
Lisa and I have been taking it easy, no rush to push through. The caravan handles beautifully even in these conditions, and there's a certain tranquility to travelling under overcast skies. The harsh glare is gone, replaced by soft, even light that makes everything feel a bit more contemplative. The distances out here are immense—the Eyre Highway doesn't muck about—but we're comfortable with the pace we've set.
It's a reminder that not every day on the road needs to be picture-perfect sunshine. There's beauty in the grey days too, in the way the landscape recedes into the mist, in the quiet that settles over everything. We're exactly where we need to be, halfway across and still discovering what this great country has to offer.
