Sometimes the best moments on the road are the unplanned ones. We'd been making our way across the Nullarbor, that vast stretch of Australia that tests both your patience and your fuel gauge, when we decided it was time for a proper lunch break.
Rather than pull into one of the designated rest areas, we spotted a quiet dirt track heading off into the scrub near Penong. It's one of the things I love most about travelling through South Australia—you can often find these peaceful little spots where you've got nothing but the bush for company.
The sky was heavy with cloud, giving everything a soft, muted quality that felt perfectly suited to a quiet midday stop. We pulled the caravan off the main road, Lisa got the billy on, and for a while we just sat there, listening to the breeze rustling through the eucalypts.
These trees have seen countless travellers pass through over the years, each one probably needing the same thing we did—a moment to stretch the legs, brew a cuppa, and let the enormity of this country sink in a bit. The Nullarbor can feel endless when you're crossing it, but that's precisely what makes stops like this so special. You're reminded that you're not racing to get anywhere; you're simply moving through the landscape, and sometimes the landscape deserves your full attention.
After a simple lunch and a decent rest, we packed up and got back on the road. The caravan settled back into its rhythm behind the fourbie, and we continued west. But even as we drove on, I found myself thinking about that quiet hour under the gums—proof that sometimes the moments between destinations are just as memorable as the destinations themselves.
