We started our morning at Katherine Gorge with a boat tour. We were initially uncertain if the experience would justify the expense, but we were pleasantly surprised. The guide possessed a wealth of knowledge that truly elevated the journey through the ancient rock formations.
The geological features of the gorge are striking. The rock faces display distinct, horizontal strata that tell a story of immense time and environmental change.
As we moved deeper into the gorge, the water remained calm, reflecting the sheer cliffs that rose on either side. The contrast between the deep orange of the rock and the blue sky is a hallmark of this region.
The river level allowed us to see the detailed textures of the gorge floor in shallower areas. The stone surfaces are etched with intricate ripples and fractures, shaped by seasonal water flows over millennia.
We finished the tour and took the opportunity for a quick swim and breakfast before packing up. The heat was already intensifying, so a final shower was necessary before we departed. We decided to make our way to Pine Creek, a small township with a rich mining history.
Upon our arrival in Pine Creek, we encountered a technical complication. We found it impossible to remove the pin from the electrical socket. It is clear there has been a short circuit in the wiring, specifically affecting the line for the fridge. We will assess the situation in the morning, but it is likely we will need to divert to Darwin to have the electrical system properly repaired.
The accommodation at Pine Creek is quite unconventional. We are staying at a caravan park that is essentially a repurposed section of a resort car park. The facilities are equally unique, utilizing converted single rooms—similar to those found in mining camps—as shared toilet and shower blocks.
The resort itself offers some unexpected touches. We saw several raised wooden planter boxes fitted with shade cloth and irrigation systems, used to grow fresh herbs on-site.
Given the soaring temperatures, we wasted no time in heading for the pool. It features a stone waterfall and a large red shade sail, providing a much-needed reprieve from the afternoon sun.
After a cooling swim and a drink at the resort bar, we retreated to the van for our evening meal. The heat persisted well into the night, making the air conditioning a mandatory requirement for any hope of a restful sleep. We will see what the morning brings regarding our electrical issues.
