They're back. After eight days of corrugations, sand, and red dust that gets into absolutely everything, the three blokes we've been following have completed their traverse of the Canning Stock Route. Steve T, Steve M, and Jamie rolled into Perth today, their LandCruiser and camper trailer bearing the battle scars of 1,850 kilometres through some of Australia's most unforgiving country.
From the launch point at Cue and Wiluna on May 22nd, bypassing straight to Well 5 to avoid station ruts, through the relentless corrugations between Wells 5 and 11, across the treacherous soft silt of Savory Creek, and finally over the salt crust of Lake Disappointment—they've done what many dream about but few actually attempt. And they did it with a camper trailer in tow, which amplifies every challenge tenfold.
The mechanical dramas started early, with Steve M performing roadside surgery on a loose trailer brake line somewhere in the red dust before they'd barely gotten started. That set the tone: out there, you fix it yourself or you don't go on. Technical rock hopping, the first major sand dunes, the hidden paradise of Durba Springs with its ancient Aboriginal rock art—each milestone represented not just distance covered but obstacles overcome through skill, patience, and sheer bloody-mindedness.
There's a beautiful irony to their journey's final mechanical drama: after hundreds of kilometres of punishment that would destroy lesser vehicles, the only flat tyre happened while parked at the Newman caravan park. Perhaps the LandCruiser was so relieved to reach civilisation it simply exhaled.
What strikes me most, following their progress from the comfort of home, is the deliberate pace of it all. This wasn't a race. It was an expedition in the truest sense—methodical, measured, respectful of the country they were crossing. Jamie's photographs throughout have captured not just the stark beauty of the desert but the quiet determination it takes to traverse it properly.
Eight days that will stay with them forever. Eight days that remind the rest of us why we're drawn to these remote places, even if we experience them vicariously for now. The Canning Stock Route doesn't give up its secrets easily, but for those willing to earn them, the rewards are immeasurable.
