The Canning Stock Route isn't something you tackle on a whim over a long weekend. At 1,850 kilometres of corrugated hell through some of Australia's most unforgiving desert country, it's a proper expedition that separates the dreamers from the doers. Right now, three blokes are out there eating red dust for breakfast, and Lisa and I have been following their progress with more than a little admiration—and a healthy dose of vicarious excitement.
Meet the crew:
Steve T is the driver, the bloke with his hands permanently welded to the wheel and his ears tuned to every concerning rattle and clunk from the chassis. When something sounds wrong—and out there, something always sounds wrong—he's under the rig with a spanner before you can say 'differential'.
Steve M, the navigator, is their lifeline. In country where one sand dune looks exactly like the last 400, he's the one with his nose in the Hema maps, making sure they find the next well and don't accidentally veer off toward the Tanami Desert.
And then there's Jamie, the photographer. While the two Steves are obsessing over tyre pressures and fuel consumption, Jamie's capturing the raw beauty of it all—the golden light washing over endless spinifex, the grit and determination etched into sunburned faces.
They're not exactly travelling light, either. They're hauling a camper trailer across the CSR, which adds a whole new dimension of challenge to an already brutal track. More weight means deeper ruts in soft sand, higher stakes on every dune crest, and a lot more coaxing needed from the engine when the grade steepens. It means carrying extra recovery gear, planning fuel consumption down to the litre, and accepting that nothing happens quickly out there.
From where we're sitting in relative comfort, following their journey feels like reading a thrilling novel in real-time. The Canning demands respect, preparation, and no small amount of courage. These three mates have all of that in spades, and watching them tackle one of Australia's most iconic outback challenges reminds us why we love this vast, challenging country. The desert doesn't give up its secrets easily—but for those willing to put in the hard yards, the rewards are absolutely unforgettable.
